Have you seen the ElfYourself emails that people are sending around this time of year? OfficeMax is getting tons of consumer-generated advertising as a result of all those emails. That’s called “viral marketing.”

With a few clicks at ElfYourself, you can have your own photos appearing as elves dancing to a holiday tune. Then you send your creation to your friends and family via email. They laugh so much that they can’t resist making their own, and voila, your message is spreading like a virus. And all OfficeMax did was license the dancing elf program from JibJab (viral video geniuses). Easy and effective.

It’s not easy to come up with the right combination, but viral marketing is a gold mine in the web marketing world. Maybe work could be more fun than you thought.

Now I’m going to go make my own ElfYourself. I can’t resist.
